Home Assistant still needs maintenance
The platform receives frequent updates, and integrations change as manufacturers revise products and services. A stable installation needs configuration backups, update review, storage monitoring, secure remote access, protected administrator accounts, network documentation, and a recovery plan for failed hardware.
Custom dashboards, templates, scripts, community extensions, and complex automations increase what the system can do, but they also increase the knowledge required to support it. A homeowner should know who owns that responsibility and what happens if the original person who built the system is no longer available.

The boundary should be intentional. Core lighting and shades should not stop working because a custom automation fails. Door access and security need appropriate safeguards. Entertainment systems should remain understandable to guests and other service providers. Home Assistant is most valuable when it adds capability without making the house dependent on one fragile chain of custom logic.
Who Home Assistant is best for
Home Assistant is a strong fit for owners who value local control, privacy, broad device compatibility, detailed automation, and the ability to customize their system. It can also work well in a professionally maintained home where the technology team documents and supports the installation.
It may be a poor fit for someone who expects a completely hands off appliance, frequently changes technology providers, or does not want responsibility for software updates and custom integrations. In those cases, a more constrained platform with a defined dealer support model may produce a better long term experience.
